How to install apps from Playbix

Android will warn you before installing anything from outside Google Play. Those warnings are doing their job — here is what they mean and how to proceed safely.

The easier way

Install the Playbix app once, and after that every game installs with a single tap and you get update notifications. You only have to go through the steps below one time instead of for every game. Get the Playbix app.

Installing a single app from the website

  1. Tap Install on the app's page. The APK file downloads to your device.
  2. Chrome will warn you that this type of file can harm your device. That warning appears for every APK from anywhere and does not mean the file is dangerous. Tap Download anyway if you trust the source.
  3. Open the downloaded file from your notification bar or your Downloads app.
  4. Android will say installing is blocked. Tap Settings in that dialog, then turn on Allow from this source for the app you are installing from — usually Chrome or your file manager. Then go back and tap Install.
  5. Play Protect may show a warning saying the app is unknown or was not scanned by Google. This means Google has not seen this app before — not that it is malware. Tap Install anyway, or More details first if you want.

Turning the permission back off

Granting "allow from this source" applies only to the app you granted it to, not to your whole phone. Still, it is good practice to turn it off when you are done:

Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps, then set Chrome (or your file manager) back to off.

This is another reason to use the Playbix app: you grant it once, to one app you chose deliberately, rather than repeatedly to your browser.

What we do before an app reaches you

  • Malware scanning. Every uploaded file is checked by multiple antivirus engines. Anything flagged as malicious never gets published.
  • Signature pinning. We permanently record the developer's cryptographic signing key on their first release. Every later update must be signed with the same key or we reject it automatically. If someone steals a developer's account, they still cannot push a tampered update to people who already installed the app.
  • Human review. A person checks each app and each developer account before first publication.
  • Permission transparency. Every listing shows exactly what the app can access, before you install.

Being honest with you

None of this is a guarantee. Scanners catch known threats, not brand-new ones, and human reviewers are not infallible. Installing software from outside Google Play means placing some trust in us and in the developer. Check the permissions, read the reviews, and if an app asks for something that makes no sense for what it does, do not install it.

How to spot a bad app anywhere

  • A flashlight or wallpaper app asking for contacts, SMS, or accessibility access.
  • "Premium unlocked" or cracked versions of paid apps. These are banned here, and wherever you find them they are the most common way Android malware spreads.
  • A listing whose screenshots do not match the described app.
  • Requests to disable Play Protect or your antivirus.

Checking a file yourself

Every app page shows the SHA-256 signing certificate fingerprint of the developer's key. If you obtained an APK somewhere else and want to confirm it is really from the same developer, compare it with:

apksigner verify --print-certs app.apk

If the fingerprint does not match what we show, do not install it.

Problems

"App not installed"

Usually means a version is already installed with a different signing key — often one obtained elsewhere. Uninstall the old copy first. Note this will delete its data.

"Package appears to be invalid"

The download was interrupted. Delete the file and download it again.

"App not compatible with your device"

Your Android version is older than the app requires, or the app targets a different CPU architecture. Each listing shows the minimum Android version it needs.
